Ken J Selby

Ken J. Selby, 60, of Union Grove, Alabama passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Morgan County, Alabama on November 22, 1965, to Dewey Lee and Joann Johnson Selby. If there were three things to know about Ken, number three would be that Ken enjoyed life. He loved to vacation with his family, whether it was walking the beaches or seeing the mountain leaves change, he just loved doing it with his folks, and his Darlene. He was also a big fan of fishing, WWE (especially Kevin Nash and Asuka), and was a faithful fan of The Alabama Crimson Tide. The next thing about Ken is that he was the hardest working man you could ever meet. His first job was doing farmwork at the age of ten, though he was undoubtedly working hard at something before that. As an adult, he worked in construction and masonry and due to his aptitude for these trades, he took on the role of handyman to many people. He was always there with a helping hand, and, if need be, a hammer. And the last --and most important-- thing to know about Ken Selby is that he had a profound and genuine love for his family. He loved his Darlene to bits and used all those bits to build her a house of her own, just how and where she wanted. He poured his heart into those walls, floors and ceilings and it came together through his shear force of will and dedication to making her happy. He doted on his grandbabies and played with them like a kid, himself. We have tried to find the words to describe how good of a PawPaw Ken was, and we have found that words won’t suffice. He was the best of PawPaws. It didn’t matter to Ken if you were born to the family or had just got there by luck of the draw, once you were family--he was there and he was helping. He was a big-hearted man. His love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was so exceptional that we only hope we can carry it forward as his legacy for generations to come. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Sam, Dwight, and William Selby and Robert Elledge; sisters, Jana Selby and Christine Johnson. Ken is survived by the love of his life, Darlene Wray; son, Johnathan Selby (Amanda); daughters, Barbie Whisenant (Jeremy), Brandie Putnam (Steve), and Sam McLeroy (AJ); brothers, Rodger Selby (Lillie) and Michael Elledge (Tammy); sisters, Rhonda Ballew and Mary Selby (Randy); 12 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026, from 12:30 pm – 2 pm at Brindlee Mountain Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at 2 pm with the burial following immediately after in Brock’s Chapel Cemetery. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel is honored to assist the family with the arrangements during this difficult time.
