Mrs. Sarah Leigh King Mitchell

Sarah Leigh King Mitchell, age 69, of Albertville, Alabama passed away peacefully at her residence in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 4, 2024. Sarah was born on November 9, 1954, to Clifton Dick King and Barbara Ann Cox King. She was the youngest of four children growing up in Arab, AL. Her mother, Barbara Ann, was her role model and inspiration. Many of the qualities she was so loved for: selfless, loving, independent, and God-fearing were qualities derived from her mother. She grew up in a loving family. The bond between her sisters, Cynthia and Sandra, and brother, Tommy, was strong. Family gatherings were always a grand spectacle that you felt a certain privilege by just attending. Upon graduating from Arab High School, she attended Snead State Community College where she met her husband, Rex Harris Mitchell. By all accounts, they were instantly smitten and have been inseparable ever since. They became synonymous with one another and were married for over 46 years. They ended up having four children, Cliff, Trevor, Clay, and Rylee. She and Rex raised their children in a house filled with love, laughter, respect, and discipline. Together, they molded their children into what they are today. Her children learned what it meant to love and be loved under their roof. She was capable of many types of love. She made you feel special and celebrated, but she also knew how to adequately apply tough love. Sarah and Rex set a perfect example of how marriage should be, and their love blossomed over the years into “the Mitchell Party of 18.” Her grandchildren are the absolute pride and joy of her life; she would humbly say her greatest accomplishments. Family vacations were her favorite. Whether it was all 18 of us staying in the same condominium in Orange Beach, frequent trips to Disney World, or a little getaway to the Smoky Mountains, you could rest assured that the trip would be packed with fun and full of memories to last a lifetime. Her ability to love unconditionally, dedication to her family, and devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, helped forge an unbreakable, ever-lasting familial bond that not even death can sever. They are all spiritually entwined forever. She was the matriarch of our family in every sense of the word. Her legacy will live on forever through her children, grandchildren, and the generations to come. In a professional career that spanned over 40 years, Sarah earned several degrees, the highest being an Educational Specialist in Instructional Leadership from the University of Alabama. She was a beloved English teacher, a highly respected school administrator, and she finished out her illustrious career as a Marshall County Schools District Improvement Specialist. Sarah poured her talents into her work at every level. The Douglas campus is no doubt where her professional heart lies. She was an administrator at each of the four schools on campus, Douglas High School being her longest tenure. She was known for her school pride, treating her students/teachers as if they were her own, and her devotion to her craft. She was the perfect example of an educator. She is survived by: husband, Rex H. Mitchell; sons, Cliff Mitchell (Sheryl), Trevor Mitchell (Emily) and Clay Mitchell (Miranda); daughter, Rylee Chaffin (Chris); eight (8) grandchildren, Arleigh Kate, Kingston, Bailee, Dawson, Audrey, Parker, Carter, and Tucker; sister, Sandra Boyd (Ervin); sister-in-law, Joan King; brother-in-law, Tim Mitchell (Lena); and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Family members preceding her in death include her parents, Dick and Barbara King; sister, Cynthia Durham (Dewey); brother, Tommy King; niece, Ashleigh King; father-in-law, R. Lee Mitchell; mother-in-law, Doris Mitchell; sister-in-law, Rhona Rush (Wendell). The family will receive friends and guests at a visitation at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Monday May 6, 2024. Afterwards, we will gather at 1:00 p.m. at Arab Memorial Cemetery for a graveside service. Brother Andrew Gregg will officiate. Escorting Sarah to her final resting place will be Cliff Mitchell, Trevor Mitchell, Clay Mitchell, Chris Chaffin, Charlie Jimmerson, and Brad King. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be John Michael Adams, Kingston Mitchell and Dawson Chaffin. Arrangements entrusted to Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel.
