Ms. Mary Virginia Hawkins Covington of Arab, Alabama; passed away in the early hours of Friday - May 14, 2021 at the age of 88 years. Mary Virginia (Hawkins) Covington was born in Guntersville, Alabama September 14, 1932 to Lewis and Rosalie Kennamer. She grew up in Guntersville, AL and attended Guntersville High School. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Leemon Hawkins, who passed away in 1985. Virginia was later married to Barney Covingtonfor 12 years, who preceded her in death. Virginia was the owner and operator of Joyland School, where she taught private kindergarten for many years. Virginia and Leemon had three children together: Charles Ray Hawkins (Carol), Arab, AL, Lana Kay Hawkins, Arab, AL and Teresa Hawkins (Randy Veal), Madison, AL. Virginia is survived by all three of her children and two grandchildren, Heather Hawkins Burgett and Ginger Hawkins (Butler), both of Arab, AL. She is survived by four great-grandchildren, Hunter Gibbs of Birmingham, AL Baylee Gibbs of Oneonta, AL, Emma Butler and Virginia Kayt (“Gia”) Burgett, both of Arab, AL. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret York, of Arab, AL, a half-sister, Susan Kennamer Bates, Grant, AL, two sisters-in-law, Faye Pierce, Oneonta, AL and Jean Shields, Guntersville, AL. Virginia is also survived by her special daughter-in-law and friend, Jean Waddell of Guntersville, AL, maternal grandmother of Gia, Virginia’s namesake and special great granddaughter. She was loved by numerous nieces, nephews, cousinsand her special church family of faith. Virginia has been a faithful member of Arab First Baptist Church since 1958. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and previously chaired the Women’s Prayer Group at First Baptist. She enjoyed gardening, collecting, interior decorating and spending time with family and friends. Visitation will take place at the Arab First Baptist Church on Monday - May 17, 2021 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. with service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Bro. David Kizziah, officiating. Interment will take place at the Arab Memorial Cemetery Pallbearers escorting Ms, Covington to her final resting place will be: Keith Collins, Steve Dumas, Mark Brock, Ty King, Keith Hawkins and Monte Davis, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Monte Davis, Sr. and Jack Hamilton Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, Directing.
