Betty Joan Burgett

With sadness in our hearts, we regret to announce the passing of our loving and precious mother, grandmother and sister, Betty “Joan” Burgett, 78, of Arab, Alabama on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Joan was born on June 29, 1946 in the Pea Ridge Community in Union Grove, AL to Velma Green. She was the eldest of six children and grew up in the Parches Cove and Union Grove area. She met Edwin Burton Burgett and they were married on February 25, 1963. They raised six children in the Union Grove and Arab area. They remained good friends until his passing in March, 2018. Joan was always a hard worker and helped to provide for her family. She worked at Gold Kist (now Pilgrim’s Pride) for 33 years. She retired in 2008. She enjoyed reading, growing beautiful flowers and feeding all the different kinds of birds that visited her yard. She would always have as many as 10-15 red birds, along with several other types, in her yard at any given time throughout the day. She loved flowers and grew lots of varieties in several colors. She loved the beauty of the natural things that God put on this earth for us to enjoy. She truly loved her children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers. She had a kind and loving heart and she would do without for herself to give to her children, grandchildren or to others that she thought needed something more than she did. She always loved anytime her family came by to visit. She is survived by her six children, LaWayne Burgett (Ursula), Teresa Mears (Tim), Deborah Cason, Darren Burgett (Kim), Pamela Bridges (Dynell) and Christopher Burgett; honorary daughter, Kim Minchew. Grandchildren are Danielle Jones (Steven), Candace DeMent (Harvey), Courtney Key (Eric), Josh Moses (Chaezz), Jared Moses, Derrick Burgett (Tonie), Michael Burgett (Jennifer), Jonathon Burgett, Tyler Bridges, (Erika), Zachery Bridges and Crymson Burgett. Great grandchildren are Zoé, Emma, Kyndle and Addie Jones, Jaida Crews, Daniel DeMent, Saylor, Rhett, and Emmett Key, Harlow Moses, Gracie Burgett, Aubree and Cooper Burgett and Winston Bridges. Step grandchildren are Chase (Kelli), Hunter and Ari (Lilly) Roberts, Blake (Kimberly) Mears, Matthew (Presley) Weems and Cami Weems. Step great grandchildren are Mason, Ariel and Hadley Roberts, Carson, Carley and Lilah Mears and Maddox Weems. She had one great great grandson named Ryker Allen. Her surviving sisters Arvaleene Abercrombie (Gary) and Margaret Vann (Mark) and brothers Ricky Green (Frankie), Mark West and Matthew West (Katie) and a host of nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by husband, Edwin Burgett, Mother and stepfather, Velma and Ewell West, grandson, Dustin Burgett and son in law, Ray Cason. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 18, with Brother Jeremy Yates officiating. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery in Union Grove. Pallbearers escorting Joan to her final resting place will be Josh Moses, Jared Moses, Derrick Burgett, Michael Burgett, Jonathon Burgett, Tyler Bridges, Zachery Bridges and Ari Roberts. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Winston Bridges, Cooper Burgett, Saylor Key, Rhett Key, Emmett Key, Carson Mears, Blake Mears, Hunter Roberts and Chase Roberts. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
